KEEP YOUR DATA SAFE WHILE YOU STAY SAFE DURING THE PANDEMIC

If you are practicing social distancing, your reliance on digital means for our day-to-day tasks increases your risk of fraudulent schemes and cybercrimes preying on the vulnerable and unwary through phishing emails, fake websites and malware intended to steal the would-be victim’s personal data and information.

Our primary defense to protect ourselves from these new threats is to be aware of our right to data privacy and take measures to protect it.  As a safety measure, the National Privacy Commission issued the following tips to secure your personal data in the time of COVID-19.

  1. Do not give out your personal data in suspicious COVID-19 themed emails and messages.
  2. Make trusted government and other legitimate websites your go-to source for the latest COVID information.
  3. Ensure that the charity or crowdfunding campaign you plan to donate to is legitimate.
  4. Be mindful of phishing baits from online scammers.[1]

As a rule of thumb, one must always be hesitant when such messages concerning the COVID-19 pandemic are received. Make sure to do your due diligence prior to giving out any specific information.
